Tips for Handling Leash Reactivity

Stay Calm and Confident:
Dogs are highly attuned to their owner's emotions, so it's essential to remain calm and confident when faced with a reactive situation. Avoid tensing up on the leash or displaying nervous or anxious behavior, as this can escalate your dog's reactivity.

Use Distance and Space:
When encountering triggers such as other dogs or strangers, create distance by calmly walking in the opposite direction or crossing the street. Increasing distance from the trigger can help reduce your dog's anxiety and prevent reactive behavior.

Implement Desensitization and Counterconditioning:
Gradually expose your dog to triggers in a controlled environment and pair the presence of the trigger with something positive, such as treats or praise. Over time, this helps your dog associate the trigger with positive experiences, reducing their reactivity.
